The syndrome of delayed life
As the war continues in Ukraine, many Ukrainians have put their lives on hold. We are waiting for victory, and with it the triumph of goodness and certainty, a clearer window into the future. We hope that we will be happy, energetic and successful, and that we will be able to continue living our lives to the fullest.
But this is a myth.
After all, as long as we live only in the future and what we will feel and live after the victory, we do little for this here and now, especially in the context of mental health. In this article, I will talk more about the syndrome of deferred life, its exacerbation during the war, and what you can do for yourself today, and this will not make the desire for victory any less strong or sincere.
In simple terms, the syndrome of postponed life is when we strive for a good life and happiness in the future, and we perceive the here and now as a time that needs to be experienced, to wait, because it seems to have no reason (or rather, internal permission) for happiness, positive experience and emotions. Often, this expectation is associated with a great goal, a grandiose dream, or a classic scenario of «successful success» that a person has not yet achieved and is usually still quite far away. In other words, the syndrome of postponed life is not about cases when we tell ourselves that «it will be better someday», but about the fact that we can feel happy only if we achieve our goals and only in the future, that happiness here and now is impossible a priori, because we are not yet educated enough, rich enough, beautiful enough, have not yet built a business empire or created that ideal family, and therefore happiness is out of the question. In the context of war, phrases such as «no time for that», «no time for that», «how can you...», etc. usually work.
In the present, emotions seem to be taboo - they are either inappropriate to feel now, or there are not enough good reasons for them, or we do not «deserve» them enough, or the contact with ourselves in general and with our bodies in particular is so weak that the only way to feel alive is to dream and squeeze the «maximum» out of these dreams. For example, not just to see yourself in your dreams as a company director, but as the owner of the most successful cluster, not just to have good relationships that bring you happiness You should be the owner of the ideal that modern films portray and that everyone will envy, or it should be not just a happy family, but a perfect husband, a prodigy child, the coolest car and an impeccable house with a dog and the most exquisite lawn in the whole neighbourhood.
The question is not that you can't want it, but whether it is really what will make you happy in reality, and that the more unattainable and grandiose such dreams feel and the more time is spent in such dreams, the more a person will devalue what they have now. When people return to reality, they usually fall into routine or sad thoughts, as if to «wait it out», to live faster, before the desires and goals of the dreamed future become reality. In practice, these desires may even be quite unrealistic and therefore impossible to achieve, so that the postponed life takes root in the person's reality and captures them for months, years, or even decades.
Luckily, procrastination syndrome is not a disease or a mental disorder - it's just a mental pattern we're used to. It's a vision, a way of thinking and perceiving reality and ourselves in it, and it's an important element in the construction of our life's scenario. Most likely, this pattern has not manifested itself so actively before, or we are so used to it that it has become a common thing. In any case, a period of war, instability and a prolonged lack of security exacerbates such states, and we either finally realise that something is wrong, or we become so immersed in dreams of a happy future that the disconnect from reality and the list of taboos (even for the simplest positive emotions and actions) become a problem - for work, relationships or daily functioning.
So, what to do about it and how to overcome such conditions today:
- Understand that the syndrome of delayed life is not a sentence or a serious illness. It can be changed, even if you recognise yourself in this article and feel that you have been putting off your real life for a long time.
- Then we can delve deeper into the question of what the syndrome was actually protecting us from. Usually, it is both a consequence and a part of the defence mechanisms that protect our psyche from not feeling certain emotions or living certain experiences.
- A great tool is the so-called art of «small steps». Ukraine's victory in the war is a global, big goal, which is achieved through many small steps. Each step is not yet a victory, but a path to it, and therefore a small part of it. Therefore, if you are postponing your life because you are waiting for victory, each small step is worth at least your smile. This way, each step is not devalued and becomes a part of your life here and now, rather than a way to «kill time» while waiting for victory.
- Taking care of our physical and mental health. After the victory, we will need a lot of strength and energy. Maybe even more than we have now. Therefore, it makes sense to take care of your body, mind, and overall stability now - all of this is an investment in the future, and at the same time, it cancels out the syndrome of procrastination, because every process of self-care brings us back to the here and now, and gives us the same feeling that we are alive and that what we do matters. It is also valuable to find meaning in what is happening around us, even if it is difficult to accept.
- In this context, I am very impressed by existential psychology (my great love in psychotherapy, along with the analytical direction in which I work) - in the process of therapy, it is about creating meaning and values that contribute to resilience in difficult circumstances and personal growth. That's why I now integrate existential psychotherapy tools into my work with clients, and this gives good and, importantly, long-term results.
We will always have time to put our lives on hold, but living them to the fullest right now is a real art and an indicator of strength of spirit. And starting to live your life here and now is already a victory - a personal one, but a significant one. After all, every such personal victory will eventually lead to the victory of the country.
